UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights: Concluding Observations on Sri Lanka (1998)

The Committee issued these concluding observations after considering Sri Lanka’s initial report on the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights in 1998. In paragraph 78, the Committee expresses concern at the high rate of suicide among youth in Sri Lanka and the rising rates of drug and alcohol dependence, adolescent crime, child abuse, and domestic violence. The Committee regrets that Sri Lanka ‘has failed to comply’ with its obligations under articles 10 and 12 of the Covenant.
