The Committee issued these concluding observations in 2009. In paragraphs 29-30, the Committee notes concern about inadequate health services in prisons, in particular high rates of sexually transmitted disease and drug abuse, and recommends that Australia develop strategies to provide adequate health care, including mental health services, to all prisoners and detainees. In paragraph 33, the Committee stresses the importance of protecting the rights of indigenous peoples in Australia, and recommends intellectual property protection for their traditional knowledge and medicine.
