Ortega v. Ecuador, UN Human Rights Committee (1997)

The author of the Communication is Jorge Villacres Ortega, an Ecuadorian citizen who was convicted for trafficking of cocaine. Mr. Ortega claimed to be a victim of cruel and inhuman treatment while arrested, arbitrary detention and lack of fair trial. 

After the consideration of the Communication the Committee found the violation of Articles 7 and 10 of the Covenant based on the medical report of the Author submitted by his council which confirmed that the author had showed signs of ill-treatment. Other parts of the complaint were found inadmissible.
