UN Human Rights Committee: Concluding Observations on Indonesia (2013)

In the concluding observations on the initial report of Indonesia, the Committee raised concern that the moratorium on the death penalty had been lifted and persons accused of drug related crimes were being sentenced to death. The Committee recommended the State abolish the death penalty, or in case of its maintenance, ensure that it is only for the “most serious” crimes.  The Committee noted that crimes involving narcotics do not reach the threshold of most serious crimes. Importantly, the Committee noted that the State party should consider commuting all sentences of death imposed on persons convicted for drug crimes.
