Rosendo Cantú et al. v. Mexico (Merits, Reparations, Costs) IACtHR Series C No 216 (31 August 2010)

Rosendo Cantu, an indigenous woman from Mexico’s Guerrero State was raped and tortured by Mexican military officials.  The accused military members were in the area conducted activities to eradicate poppy plants being grown nearby the victim’s community.  The Mexican military asserted jurisdiction over the investigation which the Court held to be inappropriate for human rights violations.  The Court held Mexico responsible for violating the right to be free from torture or cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment.
