Report of the Special Rapporteur on torture: Observations on communications transmitted to Governments and replies received, Juan E. Méndez (2013)

The Special Rapporteur mentions several allegations against Iran and Saudi Arabia, where torture has been used in order to obtain the confession of the drug trafficking offense. He urges the Governments to set aside any criminal conviction based on evidence obtained under torture.

He also highlights that the death sentence should only be imposed for the most serious crimes and not for drug-related charges. He further urges the states to ensure the individuals’ rights to a fair trial.
