UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Concluding Observations on the Sixth Periodic Report of Canada (March 2016)

Date: 25 March 2016

The UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights issued these concluding observations in March 2016. The Committee welcomes the state's ratification of international human rights conventions, as well as national measures taken to promote and protect economic, social and cultural rights.

These concluding observations also set out a series of subjects of concern, as well as recommendations for the state. In paragraph 49 the Committee raises its concern for the barriers that drug users face in relation to access to health-care services based on the stigma and punitive approach of national laws. The Committee recommend that the State incorporate a public-health and harm-reduction based approach to their national drug laws, as well as facilitate access to health care and rehabilitation for drug users.
