UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, Concluding Observations on the Sixth Periodic Report of Sweden (July 2016)

The UN Committee on Economic Social and Cultural Rights issued these concluding observations in July 2016. The Committee welcomes the State's legislative, institutional and policy measures taken to promote economic, social and cultural rights.

These concluding observations also set out a series of subjects for concern and recommendations.  In paragraph 42 the Committee raises its concern regarding the restricted access to opioid substitution therapy available to prisoners, with the consequence being the prevalence of hepatitis C amongst people who inject drugs and deaths resulting from an overdose. The Committee recommends that the State expand their efforts regarding prevention of drug abuse, expansion of the provision of drug substitution therapy, with a focus people who inject drugs in prisons, and further their harm reduction efforts.
