The Negative Impact of the War on Drugs on Public Health: the Hidden Hepatitis C Epidemic (May 2013)

This report was published by the Global Commission on Drug Policy in May 2013. The report looks at the global epidemic that is hepatitis C, the little attention that is paid to it, as well as making a series of recommendations to tackle the epidemic.

Topics covered are the prevalence of hepatitis C among people who use drugs, how incarceration of people who use drugs fuels the epidemic, health problems and mortality in relation to hepatitis C, prevention and treatment of hepatitis C, awareness and stigma associated to hepatitis C, the financial burden that follows the epidemic, the 'war on drugs', and public health approaches and their importance to battle the epidemic. The report also make a series of recommendations that are aimed at helping Governments tackle the global hepatitis C epidemic, with a focus on reforming drug policy.
